In our clinic, we use various spinal injections to treat back pain. The most common spinal injections we perform are epidural steroid injections (interlaminar, transforaminal, caudal), facet injections (also known as medial branch blocks), radiofrequency ablation procedures (RFA), and lumbar punctures (spinal tap). All of these procedures are done under fluoro-guidance to visualize the spine. In certain cases we offer sedation if the patient cannot tolerate the procedure without it.
Like any procedure, there is always the risk of bleeding, infection, nerve or spinal cord damage but these are very low. A specific risk with spinal injections is spinal headache which is rare but we always monitor for that after the procedure and during our post-procedure calls. There are additional risks involved if the procedure is done under sedation so make sure to discuss with Dr Sader.
